Students are equipped to work in a variety of child care settings, focussing on the child and his or her development in the family or alternative settings. This involves management, evaluation, care, assessment and treatment of people, places, policies, programmes and processes. The child and youth care worker has the job of "being there" for the child. He or she is not a psychologist, social worker or teacher, but should be able to work with these professionals. Children at risk need particular care.

The National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA), the largest student-run organization in America, has over 200 chapters at law schools throughout the country. This represents almost every ABA accredited law school, plus several non-accredited law schools. These chapters represent over 6,000 Black law students in six regions which encompass 48 states including Hawaii, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Recently, NBLSA established international links with Black law students in Canada, England and South Africa who decided to model their student organizations after NBLSA.

The South African Council on Higher Education (CHE) was established as an independent statutory body in May 1998 in terms of the Higher Education Act, No 101 of 1997. The Higher Education Act and the Education White Paper 3 of 1997, A Programme for the Transformation of Higher Education, establish the responsibilities of the CHE as advising the Minister of Education on all matters related to higher education policy issues and assuming executive responsibility for quality assurance within higher education and training.
