South African Cricket
A Brief History of South African Cricket
Cricket is similar in nature to American baseball. The field is laid out in a similar fashion, and there is a ball and a bat. There the similarities stop. There are 11 players on each team on the field at one time, and while the batter tries to score by hitting the ball as it comes towards him, the “pitcher” (by another name) is also trying to score by hitting the wicket behind the batter with the same ball.
In 1999 Australia and South Africa played in one of the greatest matches of all time as they tied their World Cup semi-final. South Africa finally hosted the World Cup themselves in 2003.
For many years cricket was regarded as the game of the privileged white man, but great strides have been made in recent years to make it a game for all South Africans. Most of the credit for this change must go to the United Cricket Board of South Africa’s development program, started long before the country held its first democratic elections in 1994.

South Africa made their debut at the World Cup in 1992 and went all the way to the semi-final before falling victim to a controversial ruling on matches delayed by rain. Pakistan claimed the title with a 22-run victory over England, but the South African Proteas have become masters of the limited-overs game, and together with Australia are rated the top team in the world. South African cricket was isolated from the rest of the world for 21 years because of the apartheid policies of the former government.
